Make rural stint compulsory for doctors, no lollipop will work here

The Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad’s lollipop of giving double salary and other perks to the doctors who are willing to work in rural, hilly, tribal and other difficult areas may not work as even with such attractive facilities the doctors may not go to the villages where other facilities, which are available in urban areas, are dim.

It is a time tested fact that the doctors, as is the case with others like government officers, are so infatuated with the urban luxuries that they will not go to the villages on their own even with the attraction of high salaries. Only the doctors whose aim is to serve humanity will go to the villages.

But, the question is how many doctors have such a mentality in today’s world.

Taking a softer stand than his predecessor Anbumani Ramadoss, who wanted to make a one-year rural stint compulsory for MBBS students, Azad said he would attract doctors from public and private sectors by paying them higher salaries. “We will hire doctors on contract and pay them double the salary of what they would otherwise earn in cities, if they work in rural, hilly, tribal and difficult areas. We hope higher monetary incentives will help us combat the shortage of doctors,” Azad had said.

Despite 31,000 medical graduates passing out every year and there being 6,83,582 registered allopathic doctors, only one in 10 works in rural areas. It should have been the other way round as the majority of our populace live in villages and rural areas.

“The shortage of specialist doctors is one of the main bottlenecks in improving the public healthcare system. My ministry will formulate a comprehensive medium and long-term policy within three months to meet deficiencies of human resources in the health sector,” Azad said. The minister promised to “substantially” increase the number of seats in post-graduate courses in 19 state government medical colleges.

In spite of all his tall talks, what remains to be seen is that whether Azad’s soft pedalling works or not.
I am of the firm belief that such soft-pedaling will not work in our country. Time has changed, so is the mentality of the doctors. They are no longer in the service of sufffering humanity.

At a time when the medical profession has also become a business activity, such attitude is not bound to work.

Instead, make at least one-year rural stint compulsory for MBBS students.

These are not the lollipops. In fact doctors are the most exploited section of employees. After studying for so many they get the job where there are no labour laws and no working hours. State has never treated them well.

Yes it should be made compulsory. Being in such a noble profession doctors try to bargain with the government for their benefits. stint in the rural areas should be made compulsory so that the people of these areas could get better health services otherwise doctors will never prefer to visit the remote areas.

Govt of India must change its Policy on health care, for Vllages or Rural Area we dont need MD or MS , but for small ailments a separate two years Course in Diploma must be introduced, who can be competent enough to treat people , only serious patents who will be one percent can be treated in nearby District Hospitals. Health Minister should also encourrage Homeopathy which will control desease at initial stage and it will also be very cheap to afford as compared to Allopathy treatment. I know that during Eye Flue in capital people had to rush for the Homeopaths drops. Most of the People are not aware of its efficacy, but it can show Miracles,According to leading Experts in Homeopathy , it is very time consuming and it has not resorted to the Ads , in return they dont have any Medical representatives for convessing, use of Biochemic Remedies can be taught in schools as a General knowledge it will bring down Country health Budget to very low level. On every surgery surgeons load the pateints with Antibiotics in antipation to check the infections , even than it is not controlled in some cases , In Homeopaths Doctor get indication before hand and make the body immune for infections.

Our doctors exploit patients because they treat the noble profession of medicine as a career. There is nothing wrong in that per se, but when you only focus on how much ”cost benefit” each patient represents, then there certainly is something wrong in the way our doctors think.

I am not saying all doctors are bad but most of them are. I have myself suffered several serious consequences because of lack of proper diagnoses, wrong surgery and no post op care. I have been in and out of hospitals so I should know what I am saying.

Even those of us who can pay well are often not treated well by doctors, so where can one expect them to have any feeling and kindness towards those who cannot pay them.

On the whole doctors today give a very sorry account of themselves ( barring the few exceptions)and are unwilling to be accountanble to their patients.

I think we survive inspite of the doctors who ”treat” us!
