It is unannounced ‘Emergency’ in Air India, employees gagged!

While transparency is fast becoming the key word in governance in India, especially after the implementation of RTI Act, it is unannounced ‘Emergency’ in the government-run Air India as the national carrier has issued a ‘gag order’ barring its employees from making any public announcements over the crisis facing the beleaguered airline.

The reason for the gag order? The Air India management believes that statements of the trade union persons and departmental heads, who have been exposing the management, will have direct bearing on the company’s image! The order threatens the employees of action if they failed to comply with the gag order.

What is the image it is talking about?. The public image of Air India is one of the worst today. It is facing an unprecedented liquidity crunch and seeks tax payers’ money to bail it out of the mess. It has one of the highest number of employees per aircraft and is losing around Rs 15 crore every day due to declining passenger traffic and low airfares.

Instead of bringing in good governance, the management wanted to gag those who expose their misdeeds which have brought the Airline to such a sorry pass today. While it needs crores of rupees of tax payers money to clear the mess created by years of mis-governance, the management thinks that the exposure of mis-management will spoil the image.

Why should the Air India management issue such a gag order which is clearly an infringement upon the rights of the airline’s employees? No person who believes in democracy can support such a primitive act by a government department. Rightly, the Air India employees’ union has moved the Bombay High Court against the gag order.

Meanwhile, the issue is snowballing into a political controversy with the members questioning the gag order in Parliament. I am of the firm opinion that as responsible citizens of this country, we all should join those who raise their voice against this kind of undemocratic order.

To make trade union and raise their voice against any kind of injustice and irregularity is the constitutional right of workers. Air India can't snatch this right from workers.

The conflicts between the authorities and workers are not new. These conflicts are bound to exist but the administration wants to snatch the rights of workers. These conflicts can be resolved by negotiation but the the Air India administration has always tried to curb the voice of employees.

These are the fruits of neo liberal economic policies. The policies in which workers are denied their right of collective bargaining.

I have worked for the Airline, It is a esteblished fact that Airline was run by incompetent Management from top to bottom , who have no clue to run the Airline efficiently , with out loss. Most of the Trade Union leaders, have been regularly inducted into the Management , Sreeja has brought out figure of employee which is higher than the fleet of Aircraft, Who is responsible ? As a Pilot in 1966 I had been utilised for 6-7 days in a month , while getting a salary of Rs 2000/-P M . In last 40 years lot of new Managerial Post have been created by vested interest of Politicians, Most of the Retired Managers Run Travel Agencies for this Air line, Before 1972 Managers were blaming Trade Union for its problem and losses . So AVM ,Mr. P C Lal , had bring discipline in the Trade Union , Later Management could not justify its mismanagement and due Political interference , Mr Lal who was real administrator was taken back by Minister , It was not Run by professionals but by Pilots who had no Managerial Capability. Gagging Policy had been there in the Airline which is a part of Service Rules. but lot of verbal orders were given which were againt the safty of the Flight to Pilots. It was told that any defect if observed in flight ,should not be in Black & White but to tell verbally, which was against the DGCA Rule , as other Pilot must know about the actual condition of the Aircraft.Any Information / Complaint to the Mangement was not looked properly. Cancellations and delay are part of the Accumulated defects in the Aircraft. which are supposed to be rectified at the Base Station .
