In an ignominious incident in a school near Andheri in Mumbai recently, a 39-year-old teacher lodged a complaint with the police accusing the school Principal, 56-year-old principal R.S. Shrivastav, of molesting her for the last 19 years.
The teacher, employed at the Shivm Vidya Mandir and Junior College, said the principal used to call her in his room on one pretext or other and then molest her and take advantage of her. The victim alleged that the Principal had also blackmailed her and threatened to tell people about her due to which she had not come forward till now. The teacher mustered courage to lodge a police complaint after a local TV channel flashed the incident in a sting operation.
A day after the incident, some other teachers of the school also joined the issue and accused the Principal of demanding sexual favors from them. They all said that they did not file the police complaint and tolerated the misbehaviour of the Principal fearing social stigma attached to such sexual incidents. Meanwhile, the school management has said that the teachers are framing the Principal.
While allegations and counter-allegations fly thick and fast amid the arrest of the Principal, the shameful incident has done enough damage to the institution of teachers’ profession. It is not a sporadic incident. Such vicious incidents involving teachers and students keep on coming out quite frequently in different parts of the country.
It is horrifying to watch the teachers, who should be the embodiment of all virtues in the society, are becoming part of the vices in the society. It is a holy profession, and the teachers should behave like that. Those who cannot role models to their students should not joint this saintly profession. After all, by involving in such nasty incidents what message they wanted to pass on to the children who are the future citizens of this country?
It is really sad to hear such things about the teachers. Teachers of this breed are a curse to our society. Such elements, who only help corrupt the society, should be weeded out from society. The Principal has been arrested, but the police should ensure that he gets severest punishment as this is not an ordinary crime, it is a crime against society.
Teachers, yours is a noble profession, please let it be so.
