Sreeja, Mumbai
The Sessions court in Mumbai has rejected the bail application moved by the well known Bollywood actor Shiney Ahuja who was charged with raping his maid at his home in Mumbai on June 14.
Kudos to the court! It has once again upheld the fact that the law of the land is supreme. Coming close on the heels of the disclosure of a Judge in Chennai high court on the interference a politician for an anticipatory bail in a forgery case for his protege, the Mumbai sessions court decision has once again shown that whether one is a famous actor or a billionaire, the law will prevail over everything else in this country.
The actor had applied for bail stating that he will not interfere in the investigation or try to influence the victim. He had also mentioned in his bail application that he was ready to stay away from Mumbai if the court instructs him to do so.
The court refused to believe the actor’s promise. The judge has rightly done so as these people’s words cannot be taken for their face value. Those who have committed a heinous crime like rape on a girl who have been doing his domestic work for some time do not deserve any leniency from the court.
It is clear that the first thing he will do, once out of the jail, is to gag the victim’s voice, first by money and then by muscle power and both are easily available to people like Ahuja in our society.
At present Shiney, who has been claiming innocence in the case but a DNA test is reported to have confirmed that he did have sex with his maid, is incarcerated in Arthur Road Jail in Mumbai. Long live his jail term!
